Reader’s Question:

I received a ticket for speeding in the state of PA and I just want to know if it is true that Ohio does not assess points on out of state violation. Thank you.

Cassandra

Thank you for asking Cassandra.

Ohio and Pennsylvania are both part of the Driver License Compact (DLC). This means that they do share information between their licensing agencies. For Ohio this is the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

It was said that Ohio does not assign points for out-of-state traffic infractions but in the last few years Ohio has changed the state’s points system so I would suggest that you check with the BMV to get information and make sure if your speeding ticket you got from PA will be assigned points or only be noted on your driving record in Ohio without points assigned to it.

If points are assessed for the PA speeding ticket under the points system in Ohio would result in 4 points, 2 points or no points. This depends on what the speed limit that was posted and the number of exceeding mph.

Reader’s Question:

I just want to know if the state of Ohio requires car insurance. Thank you.

Maricel

Thank you for asking Maricel.

The state of Ohio requires drivers to have either car insurance or other proof of financial responsibility (FR). It is illegal for a motor vehicle owner to allow anyone to drive their car without Financial Responsibility proof.

An individual must have at least one of the following to comply to the Financial Responsibility law:

* A motorist liability insurance policy;
* A $30,000 bond issued by an authorized surety or insurance company;
* A certificate of proof of financial responsibility signed by an insurance agent on a from prescribed the OH Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV);
* A certificate issued by the BMV, indicating that money or government bonds in the amount of $30,000 is on deposit with the Treasurer of State;
* A certificate of bond issued by the BMV in the amount of $30,000 signed by 2 people who own real estate having equity of at least $60,000;
* A certificate of self-insurance issued by the BMV to those with more than 25 motor vehicles registered in their name or a company’s name

Proof of insurance or other acceptable financial responsibility must be shown at the time of a violation or accident. If there is not Financial Responsibility in force at the time of the violation the individual’s driver’s license is suspended or revoked.

Do I Need SR24 or SR22 Forms To Get My License Back?

Reader’s question:

I need to get information on how to get an sr-24. I need my license to be reinstated but I do not own a car. what do I do? I live in Ohio.

James

Thank you for asking James.

It looks like that you are being required in Ohio to get a proof of financial responsibility or SR-22 so you may be able to reinstate your drivers license but do not own a vehicle. In this kind of situation, you will be needing a non owners sr-22.

The SR-24 was a form originally was for a notice of change of vehicle regarding a car listed on a car insurance policy with a SR-22. The use of the SR24 in recent years has disappeared almost. A replacement SR22 is generally utilized, the state needs to be notifies on the change in the vehicle.

If you are not required to carry an SR-22 but needing to have a car insurance insurance to be able to get a driver’s license in Ohio, you should then obtain a non-owners policy since you do not own a vehicle or has any intention of purchasing one in the near future.

You may contact the OH Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and/or the OH Department of Insurance to get more information on sr-24 or sr-22.

Goodluck!
