Ohio auto insurance
Reader’s Question:
Can I change my car insurance in Ohio while my car is registered in the state of Texas?
Kris
Thank you for asking Kris.
If you have changed your residency in Ohio you will need to get not only Ohio car insurance but also Ohio license plates and registration.
According to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) if you are new to Ohio, you will need to obtain a new driver license, license plates, and an title for your car in Ohio.
You can also visit your local BMV and get a pamphlet designed for new residents to OH. The website of BMV shows the steps to take in order to acquire the new driver’s license, license plate for your vehicle and Ohio title for your car. This explains the steps for getting these items.
According to Ohio laws, if you want to move to Ohio and become a resident there, you need to become a licensed Ohio driver as soon as possible. You are considered an Ohio resident once you take a job, sign a lease, buy a home, register to vote, or enroll children in school.
You may be able to get auto insurance with your Texas plates if your are in the process of changing over your license.

How Long Will DUI Stay On My Record in Ohio?
Reader’s Question:
In Ohio, how long will my DUI remain on my Motor Vehicle Record?
Kettering, OH
Being convicted of a 1st time DUI in Ohio comes with the following penalties:
- Administrative License Suspension (ALS) for a prohibited BAC;
- ALS for test refusal = one year license suspension;
- Jail – Minimum of three consecutive days or 3-day driver intervention program;
- Court License Suspension – 6 months to 3 years.
- Fine – Minimum $200 and not more than $1,000;
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) states that there is no section of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) that states convictions ever removed of a driver history. However, an administrative decision is in effect that permits for Driver Abstracts to only reflect the last 3 years driver record activity.
So it would appear that a drunk driving conviction will stay on your Ohio driving record indefinitely but you can verify with the BMV to find out for sure.

Roy
Parma, OH
It is illegal to operate a vehicle without insurance or any form of Financial Responsibility (FR) on the car in Parma and in any parts in Ohio. It is also illegal for any car owner to permit anyone else to drive the owner’s vehicle with FR proof.
If you are caught driving without car insurance the penalties can include: driver’s license suspension for a minimum of ninety days and up to two years, impoundment of your car and/or license plates plus fines and court costs.
If you are involved in an accident without auto insurance, or other Financial Responsibility coverage, additional penalties may be applied.

If it was your parent’s uninsured vehicle that you were operating, they could have penalties as well. In addition since you are a minor they might be held liable for your actions and therefore be responsible for the damages you caused in the crash.
Will My Ohio Car Insurance Increase Because of A Traffic Warning?
Reader’s Question:
When I was driving to work, I was stopped for doing 45 mph in a 25 mph. The State Patrol gave me a written warning, with no fine. With what happened, will my insurance company be contacted?
Erica
Dayton, OH
Typically a ticket for exceeding the speed limit in Dayton, OH by more than 5 mph, when the limit is less than 55 mph, results in receiving two points on your Ohio driver’s license. Since you received a written warning with no fine, this violation might not be placed on your Ohio driving record. Although, some states do not carry a fine or require a court appearance for a written warning; it instead serves as a reminder for you about your speedy driving. On some other states, they will file this warning or place a notation regarding it on your driving record. To find out for certain what Ohio does regarding written warnings, check with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles or Traffic Violation Bureau.
Your insurance company will not be contacted by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, but if the speeding offense is recorded by the Ohio State Patrol and placed on your motor vehicle record, your car insurance company will see the violation when they next look up your MVR. They normally do this when you start a policy, make changes and/or at renewal time.
Getting Auto Insurance After DUI In Ohio
Reader’s Question:
I live from another state but got a DUI in Toledo Ohio about four years ago. When will it go off my driving record? My insurance rate is too high till now.
Andrew
Toledo, Ohio (OH)
The DUI in Ohio is listed at least 6 years on your driver’s record since it is noted by the OH Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) that it is considered a first DUI violation if you are found driving with a prohibited alcohol concentration or drug of abuse with no prior OVIs within the last six years on the driving history. It is considered a second offense if you have at least 1 prior OMVI within the last six years on the driving record.
From the information from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) there is no information of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) that states regarding infractions being removed of a driver record. But, an administrative decision is in effect that permits for Driver Abstracts to only reflect the last 3 years motorist record activity.
So it looks like that a DUI conviction will stay on any OH driving record that the BMV started for you indefinitely but you can verify with the BMV to find out for sure about your situation with you being an out of state resident.
Will My License Be Suspended For Speeding Ticket in Ohio?
Reader’s Question:
I got a speeding ticket in Ohio and I just want to know how many points it will take off and if my license will be suspended? I live in Indiana.
Gene
Thank you for asking Gene.
Indiana, your home state, and Ohio ,where you received your ticket, are both members of the Drivers License Compact. This means that the Ohio BMV will share back to Indiana’s BMV information regarding your traffic offense of this speeding ticket.
In Ohio it is a 4 point offense for driving 30 mph or more over the speed limit. In Indiana on the other hand, it is a 6 point offense speeding 25 mph in excess of the posted speed limit.
Since you are licensed in Indiana, it looks like you would receive the assessment of points in Indiana. According to the Indiana BMV moving infraction convictions, which IN has a corresponding violation, the violation will be put on your driving record along with the allotted points.
To get more information on other penalties that Ohio might give you for getting speeding ticket, contact the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and/or the court entity listed on the ticket that you received.

Will Out Of State Speeding Ticket Show Up On My Ohio Record?
Reader’s Question:
I just want to know if the ticket I received in Kentucky will go to my driving record in Cincinnati OH?
Mike.
Thank you for asking Mike.
Ohio and Kentucky are both members of the Drivers License Compact. This agreement requires all member states to share all traffic infractions received by a motorist back to their home state where the person is licensed. So the Kentucky courts or Cabinet of Transportation will notify the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles about your KY ticket.
We have read in the past that Ohio does not assign points for out of state tickets, but will put the infraction or moving violations on your driving record. Ohio has changed their offense points system in the last few years so you may check with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to get more information on how out-of-state traffic violation convictions are now dealt with.

Will Out Of State Speeding Ticket Affect My Auto Insurance Rate?
Reader’s Question:
I received a speeding ticket in South Carolina. I live in Texas and I just want to know how this will affect my premium in Ohio. Can I also take any driving school to remove from my record?
Maja
Thank you for asking Maja.
Ohio and South Carolina are both part of the Driver License Compact. This means that the speeding ticket that you received from SC will be transferred from the South Carolina DMV to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, your home state and will likely be placed on your Ohio driving record.
If points are assigned to your Ohio driving record for out of state violations the state might only assess the points that the infraction would have been charged if it happened in Ohio. It has been reported that Ohio does not assign points for out of state minor moving infractions but you would need to contact with the BMV to be make sure.
If points are assigned to your Ohio vehicle driving record (MVR), you can check with the BMV to verify if taking a driving course or enrolling in traffic school will help to remove points.
Goodluck!
