My friend received a DUI and wants to get her license back. She said that she needs to get an SR22 insurance. We are just wondering how he can get an SR22 insurance if she does not have a car? She lives in Ohio.

Jim

Akron, OH

Your friend will need to get an SR22 non owners insurance if she does not have a car in her household.

If the state of Ohio requires an SR22 auto insurance certificate to have her drivers license reinstated, she will need to get this and maintain it even if she does not have a car. Normally if you own a vehicle you acquire the required liability coverages and SR22 filing on the automobile(s) you own. If your friend does not own a vehicle then you acquire a non-owners policy which is still the required coverages plus she needs to get the SR-22 filed with the state of Ohio as mandated there is just no vehicle to list on the policy.

An SR22 non-owners insurance generally permits the named insure to drive any car that they are given permission to operate by the automobile owner, unless the car is owned by a household member.

Reader’s Question:

If I have been insured with my insurance company in Columbia Ohio for 10 years, and have had consistent insurance. Does my insurer have to provide an SR22, which is needed to get an restricted driver’s license?

Pam

Columbia, OH

Your insurance company in Columbia OH does not have to provide you with a SR-22 if they do not offer SR22. Not all insurance companies file this certificate of financial responsibility or SR22 with the state which it appears you are required to do in order to get a restricted driver’s license.

If your insurance company in Ohio does not file SR-22, since some standard insurance companies do not and leave this to insurance companies that insurance to those they consider to be high risk motorists, then you will need to obtain insurance from an insurer that does file SR22s. Normally, this would mean that you would need to find insurance from an insurer that does file SR-22s which unfortunately means you then would need to terminate your coverage with your original insurance company since having 2 policies on the same car(s) is not usually allowable by law.

I am required to carry an sr22 but I just want to know if this is enough to get a car loan? Please help. I live in Ohio.

Rico

Thank you for asking Rico.

SR-22 certificate is the insurance required for an Ohio state liability . It is not physical damage coverages of collision and comprehensive that most financial institutes will require you to have on a car if you have a loan or lease to pay on whether the car is a new used one or brand new one.

You can contact your insurance agent about carrying the required insurance for the SR-22 or the financial responsibility certificate. You may also ask them about the physical damages coverages that would be required by a lien holder when you purchase a car. You should be able to get both types of coverages to maintain what the state and lien holder will require of you.

If you cannot get both types of coverages with your current insurance provider you may shop around online for other insurance companies that provide it.

Reader’s Question:

I live in Florida. I received a DUI in Ohio. How will this affect my license and driving record in Florida. Please help.

Len

Good question Len.

If you get convicted of DUI in Ohio, this will definitely affect your driver’s license in Florida. Ohio and Florida are part of the Drivers License Compact. This means that traffic violations and other major offenses from out of state will be reported back to your Ohio state.

In addition to that, if your license got suspended from out of state, the state where you got your drivers license will also suspend you license. First DUI in Florida typically is a 180 day up to 1 year license suspension. The penalties that you may face in Ohio might instead apply in Florida.

Here are the penalties for the first time convictions on DUI:

* Administrative License Suspension – 90 days to 5 years.
* Jail – Minimum of 3 days

* Fine – Minimum $200 and not more than $1000.
* Court License Suspension – 6 months to 3 years.

It is required by the state of Ohio to carry an SR-22 for various reasons You may check with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles to get more information if an sr22 will be part of your DUI penalties.

Collette

Good question Collette.

The liability insurance required for an SR-22 certificate in Ohio is state liability. It is not a physical damage coverage of collision and comprehensive like most financial institute will require an individual to have on their motor vehicle whether its a new car or a used car.

You may speak to your insurance agent regarding carrying or maintaining the required liability insurance for the SR-22. In addition to that, you may also ask them about the physical damages coverage that is being required by a insurance provider when you purchase a motor vehicle. You should be able to get both types of coverage to be able to maintain what the state and insurance company will require of you.

If you cannot get both types of coverage with your current insurance company, you may check other insurance providers that can offer you that. The easiest way to shop for quotes and offers, you may check websites of these insurance companies to get more information.

Reader’s Question:

I would like to know what a non owners bond is? Am I required to have an insurance even if I do not own a vehicle. Can I drive my someone else’s car? What coverage can I get from non owners bond?

Leslie

Good question Leslie.

It is illegal in Ohio if you drive any vehicle without any car insurance or other financial responsibility (FR) proof. It is also against the law if a vehicle owner permits anyone else to drive their own vehicle with Financial Responsibility certificate. If you apply for a driver’s license or wants renew of such license, applicants in Ohio signs a statement stating that they have sr22 and will maintain Financial Responsibility (sr22) or will not drive a car in Ohio. This is the reason why you still need an sr22 even if you dont own a vehicle.

Non-owners sr22 is a car insurance that you may purchase if they do not own a car but will be driving other motor vehicles and is required to have a liability insurance. Typically, the non owners sr22 does not provide collision or comprehensive coverage on the motor vehicle.

A bond insurance is also another term for a SR-22. If you fail to show proof of financial responsibility in Ohio, it will result in violation of the Financial Reasponsibility law. You will be required to file with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) in Ohio a SR22 or bond. So you will need to continue maintaining sr22 for three to five years.

If you are being required to get an SR-22 and you do not own a car you can get a non-owner SR-22. You can fulfill the required liability insurance coverage by the Ohio BMV while driving vehicles.

Not all insurance companies offer sr-22. You may shop around or get quotes from individual insurance company websites to check which can give you the cheapest coverage in Ohio.

Reader’s question:

I need to get information on how to get an sr-24. I need my license to be reinstated but I do not own a car. what do I do? I live in Ohio.

James

Thank you for asking James.

It looks like that you are being required in Ohio to get a proof of financial responsibility or SR-22 so you may be able to reinstate your drivers license but do not own a vehicle. In this kind of situation, you will be needing a non owners sr-22.

The SR-24 was a form originally was for a notice of change of vehicle regarding a car listed on a car insurance policy with a SR-22. The use of the SR24 in recent years has disappeared almost. A replacement SR22 is generally utilized, the state needs to be notifies on the change in the vehicle.

If you are not required to carry an SR-22 but needing to have a car insurance insurance to be able to get a driver’s license in Ohio, you should then obtain a non-owners policy since you do not own a vehicle or has any intention of purchasing one in the near future.

You may contact the OH Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and/or the OH Department of Insurance to get more information on sr-24 or sr-22.
